Taipei, Nov. 30 (CNA) The number of imported luxury automobilesunloaded at the Port of Taichung has been steadily increasing inrecent months, which is a sign of economic recovery, the TaichungHarbor Bureau (THB) and car dealers said Tuesday.
Following the arrival a day earlier of a vessel carrying 1,419luxury cars, worth a combined total of around NT$4.2 billion (US$140million) , the THB said another, carrying 733 more luxury vehicles,would arrive the following day.
"The cars come and go so fast, " said Jim Liang, the THBwarehouse chief. "I looked at the storage area from my office windowand found that two-thirds of the ones that arrived a day earlier hadalready gone."
Liang said the bureau has seen a steady rise in the number ofcars imported via the central Taiwan port since May, which Liang saidis an indicator of the increasing purchasing power of localconsumers.
Car dealers also expressed optimism about the prospects for thelocal car market. "The climate will get better and better in thefuture, " said Lily Lin, vice president of Elite InternationalLogistics Co., which franchises car pre-delivery inspections.
