Line TV partner confirms user data breach

Taipei, Feb. 6 (CNA) A partner company of Line TV, a video streaming platform with more than 6 million users, reported that some users' data, including passwords and phone numbers, was hacked in late January.

The company said Line TV operates on a separate server and information security system from the messaging app Line, adding that the incident did not affect Line or related services, including operations and user data security.

Choco Media Entertainment Co., the authorized service provider for Line TV, said Thursday it discovered on Jan. 26 that part of its user data had been accessed without authorization from Jan. 24-26.

The leaked data may include user IDs, email addresses, phone numbers, hashed passwords, encrypted addresses, birthdays, nicknames, profile photos, and order records, the company added.

Choco Media Entertainment stressed that no financial information, such as bank account or credit card details, was compromised.

As compensation, the company said free Line TV users who registered before Thursday will receive a code granting 14 days of free access to all content on the platform. VIP users will receive two 30-day free access codes.

The company noted it activated its highest-level emergency response measures after discovering the breach and notified authorities in accordance with the law.

It added that the system vulnerability has been fixed and it has worked with a professional cybersecurity firm to strengthen data protection and assess potential additional risks.
