Taipei, Dec. 19 (CNA) An individual was rushed for emergency treatment after being injured by a smoke grenade thrown in MRT Taipei Main Station on Friday afternoon, according to Taipei Fire Department.

The department said it received a report at 5:24 p.m. that a smoke grenade had been thrown in the station, leaving one person injured.

The victim was a 57-year-old male, whose heart stopped beating at the scene and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. Currently, no arrests have been made and police provided no information on the identity of the perpetrator.

Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. said in a statement that smoke from the incident drifted onto station platforms, prompting trains to temporarily pass through without stopping. Normal operations resumed after the smoke dissipated.

The company noted that the smoke grenade was thrown near Exit M7 of the station at around 5 p.m. adding that the police and fire service were immediately notified. The incident remains under investigation.
