Taiwan expresses condolences to Spain after 20-plus killed in train collision

Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) The Taiwan government on Monday expressed its condolences to Spain after two trains collided in the southern part of the country on Sunday, killing at least 20 people.

A high-speed train derailed and collided with another train near Adumuz in the province of Cordoba, south of the capital Madrid, on Sunday evening, according to Spain's Interior Ministry, a Reuters report said.

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente told reporters that the cause of the crash had not yet been determined, according to the report.

Asked to comment on the incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said in a statement to CNA on Monday that its representative office in Madrid had so far found no Taiwanese injured or killed in the accident.

MOFA said it has also asked the office to convey the Taiwan government's and its people's condolences and concern over the incident to the Spanish side.

Meanwhile, MOFA advised Taiwanese nationals in Spain who require emergency assistance to call the representative office at 639-384-883, or ask family members in Taiwan to contact MOFA's 24-hour toll-free emergency hotline at 0800-085-095.
