Registrations open for 2021 Kinmen Marathon

Kinmen, Oct. 12 (CNA) The 2021 Kinmen Marathon is set for Jan. 16 and 17 next year with the priority registration for 2020 registrants at 6 p.m. on Oct. 16 as this year’s race was canceled over COVID concerns, the county‘s Magistrate Yang Cheng-wu (楊鎮浯) announced on Monday.

As for all runners around the world, the organizer will open the process at 6 p.m. on Oct. 26.

The annual event, set to attract 19,000 participants this year, will open with a 4.5-kilometer run for the first day, and conclude with an annual 11.2K run and half- and full marathons on the second day, the county government said.

National Quemoy University will be the starting and finishing point for all of theraces.

The county has zero confirmed cases as of today; Yang stressed the county will strictly implement preventive measures during the event. He welcomes local and international runners to join the race while experiencing the beauty of the natural attractions and local gourmet foods. Yang appeared at a press conference with popular YouTuber TOMO to promote the event.

The organizer of the event, the Chinese Taipei Road Running Association said, in addition to the priority registration, last year’s registrants can purchase limited quantity commemorative wines of 2020 Kinmen Marathon at the time of registration, plus medals and large bath towels.

Secretary-general of the association Chen Hua-heng (陳華恆) said the key differencefor the 2021 event is the race route extending to Kinmen’s Jinsha Township, where includes the most popular social media checked-in locations such as the sorghum fields and Rong Lake at the foot of Taiwu Mountain.

The event certified by the Association of International Marathons and DistanceRaces (AIMS) and the World Athletics, formally International Association of AthleticsFederations (IAAF), will enter its 13th edition.

As for the finisher medal of the coming race, the design highlights the elements of Kinmen’s Wind Lion Gods images and traditional Minnan ancient houses with horseback shaped roofs. In addition, registration gifts include designed race shirts, bags and small towels. Everyone who crosses the finish line will receive custom finisher medals, commemorative wines and towels.
