Kinmen strives for permission to build new commercial port in Mashan

The project of demarcation of the new commercial port area aims to bring prosperity to the east part of the county. The final review of the project will be completed in October and will seek approval from the Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC).
In response to the year-on-year growth of the small three-link passenger traffic, and reducing the congestion of Shueitou Port during the peak season, while taking into account the economic development of the east and the west of the outlying island, the county presented a feasible report about constructing a multi-functional port on the east coast of Kinmen, which had earned support from the authority during the 2018-2019 period.
After on-site surveys, reviews by experts and briefing to locals, the county finally chose the site on the west coast of Mashan. The Tourism Department of the county said in a press release.
The department indicated the planned port, the fourth one in Kinmen, will be mainly used for assisting small three-link passenger and freight transport, to relieve rapid passenger growth in Shueitou Port and balance the economic and trade development of the ease and west areas of the outlying island.
In addition, the new port will also serve as a tourist spot while promoting local economy and industrial transformation.
Director of the department Ding Jian-gang (丁健剛) indicated the county began actively to seek for the approval of building Mashan port following the inspection of legislators of the legislative committee of transport and MOTC Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) in May of 2019. After listening to the county‘s briefing and local public opinions, Lin then agreed to incorporate it into the domestic commercial port development program from 2022 to 2026.
In addition, the Speaker of Kinmen County Council Hong Yun-tien (洪允典) and many other councilors inspected the area in December last year. They confirmed the project could drive the development and prosperity of the east.
The county stressed the regional tourism and economic development will be promoted through the construction of the infrastructure. It expects to see the flow of tourists to empower local consumption, create employment opportunities and bring the prosperity to the east of the county. (Sponsored Content)
