Kinmen offers pneumococcal vaccinations to residents aged 65 to 74
Kinmen, Sep.11 (CNA) Kinmen offers pneumococcal vaccinations to its residents aged from 65 to 74 starting Friday, the county’s Magistrate Yang Cheng-wu（楊鎮浯）announced at a press event.
After providing free 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) to diabetics aged from 50 to 64 at the beginning of this year, the county has launched new vaccine program for the seniors aged between 65 and 74 on Friday. Eligible vaccine recipients could receive the free service at the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Kinmen Hospital, local health centers or contracted clinics.
Medical specialist Lin Tzou-yien (林奏延), President of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society of Taiwan Lee Ping-ing (李秉穎) and Physician Chen Po-yen (陳伯彥) of Taichung Veterans General Hospital's Department of Pediatrics also attended the event.
To fully protect the seniors from the threat of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), Yang said, in addition to the government-funded Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPV) provided by Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) for the age over 75, the outlying island expands the service to include residents aged from 65 to 74 to be injected with PCV13.
Yang noted pneumonia is the third leading cause of death in Taiwan, as well as in Kinmen. The seniors aged over 65 are considered at high risk of developing complications from the IPD, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, such as sepsis, meningitis, and pneumonia.
Lin praised the county has taken a proactive approach to expand its free vaccine program.
“The seniors in Kinmen are really blessed,” Lin said. The physician also expects the elderly across the country will have the same service in the near future.
Kinmen’s Public Health Bureau reminds residents who are planning to go for vaccination to bring their ID cards and health insurance cards.
