Military joins rescue mission in Hualien after strong quake

Taipei, Feb. 7 (CNA) Several buildings slanted, caved in or had their first floor crushed and roads were damaged after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake jolted the eastern Taiwan city of Hualien late Tuesday.

Damage to buildings and roads were reported in Hualien City, which posted an intensity of 7, including a hotel building.

Military spokesman Chen Chung-chi said Hua-tung Defense Command commander has arrived the collapsed building to supervise the rescue mission.

He noted 88 military personnel of the command have been dispatched to the scene to assist the rescue mission. Another 250 soldiers will be dispatched soon.
