Taipei, Jan. 6 (CNA) Taiwan's leading smartphone brand HTC Corp. (宏達電) saw its consolidated sales fall 35 percent from a year earlier in 2016 to their lowest level in 12 years.

In a statement issued Friday, the company reported consolidated sales of NT$78.16 billion (US$2.44 billion) for the year, the lowest since it posted annual sales of NT$72.77 billion in 2005.

HTC sales had not fallen below NT$100 billion in any year since then.

In December alone, HTC had sales of NT$6.41 billion, down 16.42 percent from the NT$7.67 billion recorded in November and also down 1.7 percent from the same period a year ago.

Analysts said HTC, which is the sole contract manufacturer of Google's Pixel smartphone series aside from marketing its own brand, saw its sales peak in 2016 in September and October, when it reported revenues of NT$9.33 billion and NT$8.17 billion, respectively.

HTC is expected to unveil new smartphone models on Jan. 12. Reports have said the new models will have big screens in a bid to seize the niche vacated by the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 after it was pulled from the market because of an exploding battery problem.
