Taipei, July 9 (CNA) Taiwan's agricultural losses from the damage wrought by Typhoon Nepartak have been initially estimated at N$776.93 million (US$24.1 million), the Council of Agriculture (COA) said Saturday.

Taitung County suffered 87 percent of the agricultural damage, with losses of around NT$672.24 million, followed by Pingtung County with losses of NT$65.15 million (8 percent), and Kaohsiung City NT$33.7 million (4 percent), the COA said.

The most heavily damaged crop was custard apples, with 4,198 hectares ravaged, amounting to losses of NT$467.17 million, the COA said, adding that bananas also took a major beating.

According to the Central Disaster Emergency Operation Center, seven provincial highways, including No. 7 and No. 23, were damaged during the typhoon and will not be fully repaired until July 25.

Nepartak, which swept across Taiwan Friday, left 545,696 households without electricity, and 24,829 without water.

Emergency utility crews are working to restore electricity to all households by 10 p.m. Saturday and to fully resume the water supply by midnight.
