Taipei, July 9 (CNA) Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council on Saturday thanked China for the message of condolence sent a day earlier in the wake of Typhoon Nepartak, which ravaged eastern Taiwan and took three lives.

The council expressed its thanks to China's Taiwan Affairs Office via the media.

On Friday, through China's state-owned Xinhua news agency, the Taiwan Affairs Office expressed "deep concern" over the disaster and sent its condolences to the victims.

"We sincerely hope that the people affected by the disaster will resume their normal production and order of life soon," it said.

China has suspended official communications with Taiwan since May 20, when Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) was inaugurated. It said Tsai has failed to recognize the "1992 consensus," which Beijing considers the political foundation for the development of cross-strait ties.
