School, office closures for Friday as typhoon approaches Taiwan

Taipei, July 7 (CNA) All cities and counties in Taiwan, except Kinmen and Matsu, on Thursday have announced school and office closures for Friday in anticipation of inclement weather due to Super Typhoon Nepartak.

Taiwan's equity and exchange markets will also be closed for Friday.

Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. (THSRC) said it will suspend all services on Friday. Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) said it will not operate any express trains on Friday up to 5 p.m.

Bus services in Taipei and New Taipei will be suspended before noon Friday, according to Taipei's Transportation Department.

Work and school in Kinmen and Lienchiang (Matsu) counties, in the Republic of China (Taiwan) administered Fujian Province, will proceed as normal on Friday morning.

Schools and offices have been closed on Thursday evening in Taoyuan's Fuxing District, Hsinchu County's Jianshi and Wufeng townships, and some townships in Yilan, Hualien and Taitung counties.

As of 8 p.m. Thursday, Super Typhoon Nepartak was centered 180 kilometers east-southeast of Taitung, moving at a speed of 17 km per hour in a west-northwesterly direction, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

With a radius of 200 km, the storm was carrying maximum sustained winds of 198 kph, with gusts of up to 245 kph, said the bureau.

The first typhoon of the 2016 Pacific typhoon season is forecast to make landfall on east coast of Taiwan on Friday morning and is expected to batter the country throughout Friday.
