Taipei, Oct. 30 (CNA) The Taiwan High Court on Friday upheld the death sentence against Cheng Chieh (鄭捷), who was convicted by a lower court in March of killing four passengers in a random knife attack on a Taipei subway train last year.

Cheng, a 22-year-old college student, chose not to appear in court for the ruling. He has the right to appeal the high court verdict.

In the attack in May 2104, Chen went on rampage on a moving train in Taipei, stabbing and slashing random passengers. In the 90 seconds before he was subdued, he killed four people and injured 22 others.

Cheng had told prosecutors that since he was in elementary school, he had sworn to kill people.
