Taipei, Oct. 6 (CNA) The money donated to victims of the Formosa Fun Coast Water Park flash fire will be distributed to them based on the severity of their injuries, as assessed by doctors, the donation management committee announced Tuesday.

The families of the people who died as a result of the June 27 fire will each receive NT$8.25 million (US$252,720), according to the committee.

An amount of between NT$65,000 and NT$6.5 million will be given to each of the surviving victims according to the severity of their injuries on a scale 1 to 10, with 10 being the most severe, New Taipei City Public Health Department Commissioner Lin Chi-hung (林奇宏) said at a press conference.

The donations will be distributed over a four-phase period, Lin said.

Dai Niann-tzy (戴念梓), president of the Taiwan Society for Burn Injuries and Wound Healing, said doctors will determine the severity of the patients' injuries, but the families will have the right to request a reassessment.

As of the end of September, donations to the victims of the water park fire had reached over NT$1.61 billion, according to New Taipei City Social Welfare Department Commissioner Zhang Jin-li (張錦麗).

She said the money will be used to help with the recovery and rehabilitation of the victims.

The fire occurred at Formosa Fun Water Park in New Taipei on June 27, when a colored cornstarch powder exploded during a party. Some 499 people were injured and 12 have since died.

As of Oct. 1, 107 victims of the water park explosion remained hospitalized, with 19 in intensive care units and 12 listed as in critical condition, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
