KMT chairman reaffirms Taiwan's sovereignty over Diaoyutais

New Taipei City, July 25 (CNA) Eric Chu (朱立倫), chairman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT), said Saturday that the Diaoyutais and the South China Sea islands are inherent parts of the territory of the Republic of China, and that the remarks by former ROC President Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) about the islands were unacceptable.

Chu said it is clearly stated in the ROC's Constitution and in the KMT's manifesto that the Diaoyutais and the islands in the South China Sea are inherent parts of the territory of ROC.

A great majority of the people in Taiwan hold this position on the territory, said Chu, who is also mayor of New Taipei, the most populous city in Taiwan.

He said he could not agree with the viewpoint that the Diaoyutais and the South China Sea islands do not belong to the ROC, no matter who advocates such a viewpoint.

Lee reportedly said Thursday during a visit to Japan that the Diaoyutai Islands belong to Japan.
