Taiwan working on return of fraud suspects from Egypt: MOFA
【Society】2014-10-06  11:58:32
Taipei, Oct. 6 (CNA) The government will make its best effort to have authorities in Egypt repatriate 40 Taiwanese fraud suspects recently arrested in the country, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Simon Ko said Monday.

The ministry will pay special attention to the matter to ensure that the suspects are not sent to China by mistake, Ko told lawmakers during a legislative hearing.

He said as soon as the ministry was informed of the arrest, it sent diplomatic officials to Egypt, which does not have official ties with Taiwan, to urge police there to ensure the basic human rights of the Taiwanese suspects and convey Taiwan's jurisdiction over the 40 suspects.

According to media reports, the 40 suspects were caught in late July along with 56 Chinese nationals for operating a phone fraud ring out of Egypt that targeted victims in Taiwan and China.

Fourteen Taiwan nationals arrested under similar circumstances in the Philippines were sent to China in February 2011, triggering a row between Taipei and Manila.
