Taipei, May 23 (CNA) The parents of the 21-year-old man alleged to be responsible for Wednesday's knife attack that left 4 dead on the Taipei Metro said Friday that they, too, are at a loss for what was behind the event and expressed deep sorrow to the families of the victims.

In a statement released Friday, Cheng Chieh's parents said that they were pained, shocked, and baffled, writing that no matter how much they say sorry, it will never be enough to make up for the pain and suffering inflicted.

The parents said they blame themselves for Cheng's alleged behavior and will not try to shift the blame.

The statement closed with a plea for others not to imitate the bloody attack on the moving metro train that also left 24 injured.

The written statement was read by New Taipei City Councilor Lin Kuo-chun, who lives in the same neighborhood as the Cheng family and was asked to present it on their behalf.

The Chengs had reportedly originally planned to make a public apology to the victims, their families and society at large.
