Taipei, March 13 (CNA) The Ministry of Finance's (MOF) Political Deputy Minister Lee Ruey-tsang will sit in temporarily as the acting finance minister after the resignation of the incumbent over a pre-election melee, Executive Yuan spokesman Shieh Jhy-wey said Thursday.

Finance Minister Ho Chih-chin tendered his resignation earlier in the day, which has been approved by Premier Chang Chun-hsiung, Shieh said.

"Chang will decide whether to appoint a new finance minister or not, " Shieh said.

Ho resigned to take responsibility for a scuffle that broke out Wednesday between four opposition Kuomintang (KMT) legislators and supporters of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's presidential candidate Frank Hsieh at Hsieh's campaign headquarters.

At the request KMT legislators, Ho accompanied them to Hsieh's campaign headquarters located at a building belonging to First Financial Holding on Changan East Road, Taipei City, to investigate whether the building was rented illegally to Hsieh.

The visit triggered strong displeasure among Hsieh's supporters who considered the move provocative. A scuffle broke out when the supporters tried to block the lawmakers from leaving the site in a police car.

Shieh accused these KMT legislators of abusing power, saying that they have shown society a "terrible example" of the misuse of legislators' powers.

He said the KMT should not allow its lawmakers to have their power override the country's laws, even though the party holds three- fourths of the seats in the legislature.
