Foreign teams to compete in Taipei dragon boat races

Taipei, June 9 (CNA) Some 207 teams from home and abroadwill participate in this year's Taipei International Dragon Boat Championships, officials said Saturday.

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin hosted an eye-dotting ceremony at Zhoumei Wharf for the dragon boats that will be used in the races, to pray for a smooth procedure of the annual Dragon Boat Festival.

Several foreign envoys in Taiwan also attended the ceremony and took part in dotting the eyes of the dragons on the boats.

City officials said 207 teams from Taiwan and countries such as Singapore, China, Malaysia and the Philippines will compete in the championships, to be held June 22-24 at Dajia Riverside Park.

People attending the event will also have a chance to join a friendly dragon boat race, the officials said.

The Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month on the lunar calendar, falls on June 23 this year.

In addition to the races, the festivities will feature other performances by street entertainers and an "egg standing" event. In folk culture, it is believed that a person will have a year of good luck if they can balance an egg upright on a table or on the groundat noon on the day of the festival.

The organizers said there will also be a competition to make zongzi, a steamed rice dumpling that is traditionally eaten during the festival.
