Taipei, Aug. 1 (CNA) The 2018 Federation of International Robot- Sports Association (FIRA) RoboWorld Cup will kick off at Feng Chia University in Taichung Aug. 7, with 1,208 participants from 12 countries, the organizers said at a press conference Wednesday.

The competition, hosted jointly by FIRA and the Central Taiwan Science Park Bureau, features FIRA's first robot-human competition in archery, in which archery teams from two schools in Taichung will participate.

Although the robot-human competition signals the improvement of robotic technology in sports, the robots' abilities need to be strengthened before they can play football with humans, which is one of FIRA's long-term goals, said Tu Kuo-yang (杜國洋), a member of the competition's executive committee.

According to the website of the 2018 RoboWorld Cup, the competition is made up of four sections -- FIRA Sports, FIRA Youth, FIRA Challenges and FIRA Air.

According to the press conference, teams from Taiwan, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, China, Brazil, Iran, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico, Indonesia and Russia have registered for the competition.
