Taipei, Jan. 17 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis star Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and her American partner Abigail Spears got off to a good start Thursday at the Australian Open, scoring a win in the first round of the women's doubles.

Hsieh and Spears, partnering for the second time this year after their early exit from the Sydney International last week, beat Bernarda Pera of the United States and Rebecca Peterson of Sweden 6-3, 6-4 in 84 minutes.

Hsieh and Spears will next face Australian Samantha Stosur and Chinese Shuai Zhang in the second round on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Hsieh, the world No. 28 female player, also secured a spot in the women's singles event, beating Laura Siegemund of Germany in three straight games to advance to the third round of the tournament.

The Australian Open is the first of four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
