Taiwan's Hsieh through to women's singles 3rd round at Australian Open

Taipei, Jan. 17 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis star Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) advanced to the third round of the women's singles at the Australian Open on Thursday, defeating Laura Siegemund of Germany in three straight games.

Hsieh won 6-4 against Siegemund, who had prevailed over two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in a first-round match.

Hsieh took two match points in the tenth game to defeat Siegemund.

Hsieh got off to a good start at the Australian Open on Tuesday, ousting Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland in straight sets in a first-round women's singles match.

The 33-year-old Taiwanese star from Kaohsiung will next take on U.S. Open winner Naomi Osaka of Japan in the third round.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese women's doubles team, seventh-seeded Latisha Chan (詹詠然) and Chan Hao-ching (詹皓晴), also scored a victory on Thursday.

The sisters broke a serve by Australians Ellen Perez and Arina Rodionova to take a 3-1 lead in the first set.

The Chans also broke their opponents' serve in the 11th game to secure a 6-5 lead.

Earning three match points, the sisters finished 7-5 to progress to the second round of the women's doubles.

They will next face off against Jiang Xinyu and Qiang Wang of China.

The only Taiwanese in action Wednesday at the Melbourne tournament were the women's doubles duo Chang Kai-chen (張凱貞) and Hsu Ching-wen (徐竫雯), who fell to Kaityln Christian and Asia Muhammad of the United States 6-1, 6-2.
