Taiwan badminton ace defeated in second match of World Tour Finals

Taipei, Dec. 13 (CNA) Taiwan badminton ace Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) was defeated in her second Group A match at the women's singles Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Finals in China on Thursday.

Tai, the top-ranked female player in the world, lost to Pusarla V. Sindhu of India 21-14, 16-21, 18-21 in a match that lasted 61 minutes.

The two have met 13 times in the past, with the Taiwanese player victorious in 10 of those matches. Tai had beaten the sixth-seeded Sindhu the last six times they played.

Tai has topped the world rankings since Dec. 1, 2016, except for two weeks in April this year.

She will next go up against Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in her third and final match in Group A on Friday.

The world No. 2 Japanese player had played well against Tai in the past, winning six of their 13 encounters.

The BWF World Tour Finals, which is being held in Guangzhou until Dec. 16, is an annual badminton tournament staged at the end of the year, where players with the most points from that calendar year on the BWF World Tour compete for total prize money of US$1.5 million.
