Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) Taiwan beat South Korea 7-3 Wednesday in the second round of the under-18 Baseball World Championship in Seoul, improving its chances of entering the medal contention.

Taiwan scored its first two runs in the first half of the sixth inning but the Korean team responded quickly in the second half of the game in the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) 18U competition.

South Korea scored one run on two hits and another on Taiwanese reliever Tseng Jen-ho's balk.

Trailing 2-3 into the bottom of the ninth, South Korea extended the game by scoring a tying run on two hits but Taiwan secured the victory with four more runs in the 10th inning.

A total of six teams are competing in the second round and first-round standings will be carried over. Taiwan will need to win at least two of its three scheduled games to advance to a medal game and will gain a place in the final if it wins all three.

Taiwan will face the United States on Thursday and Colombia the day after.

Also on Wednesday, Japan lost to Colombia 3-0, while Canada defeated the U.S. 1-0.
