Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) T-shirts emblazoned with the Chinese name of Wei-Yin Chen, the left-handed pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, went on sale in Taiwan Saturday, a dealer said.

GO GO Sports center said the T-shirts, which cost NT$800 (US$27) each, have the word Orioles in English on the front and Chen's Chinese name and his No. 16 on the back.

The company's marketing department said the Taiwanese version, decided on by fans through online voting, is different from the U.S. version that has "Orioles" in Chinese on the front.

"Taiwanese fans still like American style English," a marketing officer said.

The Orioles have not been among the most popular MLB teams in Taiwan, but with Chen's good performance recently, sales of the team's products have quadrupled, with caps being the most popular item, the company said.

"Sales shot up the day after Chen won a game," the company said.

On Aug. 10, the Baltimore Orioles gave out 10,000 T-shirts bearing Wei-Yin Chen's Chinese name, making it a Chen night.
