Taipei, Aug. 31 (CNA) Taiwan's Chuang Chia-jung and Chinese partner Zhang Shuai defeated former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters and fellow Belgian Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets in their first round women's doubles match at the U.S. Open Thursday.
The Taiwan-China duo advanced to the second round of the event after beating the Belgian pair 6-3, 6-4 in one hour, 19 minutes.
Chuang, a women's doubles runner-up in 2007, has not advanced past the second round since 2008. Chuang and Zhang, who began playing together in May, will next face Czech Eva Birnerova and Romina Oprandi of Switzerland. Clijsters, who announced she will retire after playing at Flushing Meadows, has now been eliminated in the women's singles and doubles, but is still entered in the mixed doubles.
Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei and Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, seeded 16th in the women's doubles, eased past the Netherlands-France duo of Michaella Krajicek and Pauline Parmentier 6-4, 6-0 to also reach the second round.
But Chan Yung-jan and Chan Hao-ching of Taiwan lost to 14th seeds Natalie Grandin of South Africa and Vladimira Uhlirova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (4), 6-1 in their first round match Thursday.
