Taipei, Aug. 2 (CNA) Taiwan's taekwondo athletes departed for London Thursday to compete in the Olympic Games.

The three fighters are world No. 1 in the women's 57 kg category, Tseng Li-cheng, world No. 2 in the women's 49 kg category, Yang Shu-chun, and world No. 3 in the men's 58 kg category, Wei Chen-yang.

Other outbound passengers cheered the trio, on whom Taiwan is pinning its hopes for more Olympic medals, at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Yang, 26, said this is the last time she will compete in the Olympics and that she is hoping to do well, especially after her travails at the Asian Games in Guangzhou in 2010, when she was disqualified for wearing illegal sensors, losing her chance for a gold medal.

Wei, competing in his first Olympics, said that "my goal is a gold medal" and added that he will draw strength from his training and his experience at the Asian Games.

Tseng said that she will do her best.
