Hanoi, July 12 (CNA) Taiwan will host the Asian Amateur Muay Thai Championship next year, according to a Taiwanese team that is competing in the combat sport in this year's tournament in Vietnam.
A team official said Thursday that the Asian Muay Federation has agreed unanimously to accept Taiwan's bid to host the event in April 2013.
Taiwan won the bid largely because of the efforts of Kuomintang Aboriginal Legislator Chien Tong-ming, who is currently leading the Taiwan team in Vietnam, the official said.
The tournament is seen as a warm-up to the Asian Indoor Games, which will be held in Incheon, South Korea next year.
Meanwhile, the Taiwan team said many of its athletes have advanced to the semifinals of the Muay Thai championships in Ho Chi Minh City, where some 20 countries in the region are competing.
Muay Thai, which literally means "Thai boxing," is a form of martial arts that involves extensive use of the elbows and knees.
