Taiwan advances to Little League Baseball World Series

Taipei, July 8 (CNA) Taiwan defeated Hong Kong 12-2 in the Asia-Pacific Regional Tournament of Little League Baseball (LLB) Sunday to secure a place in the Little League World Series slated to take place Aug. 16-26 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The game was called after fourth inning when the Taiwanese team from the Gueishan Elementary School in northern Taiwan's Taoyuan County was leading by 10 points.

Taiwanese pitcher Lee Cheng-feng threw the complete four innings, giving up only two runs and striking out eight during the team's romp to victory.

Lee, who was named most valuable player by the league, was a major factor in the team's success, said Lee Cheng-ta, head coach of the Chinese Taipei national baseball team.

However, the coach said the team did not perform well on hitting in Sunday's game, which is normally the team's strong point.

Taiwan also beat Guam, New Zealand, Thailand and the Philippines to win the tournament, which was held July 2-8 in Taichung, central Taiwan, with teams from 10 countries and regions competing.

The team's experience gleaned from playing the international-level games could help improve the skill of the players and take them to success in the world series next month, the coach added.
