Taipei, July 7 (CNA) A Taiwanese pool team defeated Japan 4-0 Friday to clinch first place at the 2012 World Pool Team Championship in Beijing.
Taiwan's foursome of Chang Jun-lin, Ko Pin-yi, Fu Che-wei and Chou Chieh-yu took home the grand prize of US$80,000 for the June 30-July 6 competition.
World number two Chang and world number six Ko beat Japan's Naoyuki Oi and Yukio Akakagariyama 6-0 in the opening match of the 8-ball doubles, giving the Taiwanese team a 1-0 lead.
In the second match, it appeared as if Japan's Toru Kuibayashi was going to win, having scored 5-2 in the 8-ball singles, but Fu fought his way back to tie with the Japanese player before clearing the table for a 2-0 win for the Taiwanese.
Chou, champion of the 2012 Amway eSpringWomen's World 9-Ball Open, which took place in March in Taoyuan County, northern Taiwan, bagged another victory for the team in the women's 9-ball singles with an 8-2 win over Japan's Chihiro Kawahara.
Ko sealed the team's title with a strong performance in the men's 10-ball singles by defeating Yukio Akakagariyama 7-4.
