Taiwanese runner wins gold at Asian athletics meet

Colombo, June 10 (CNA) Taiwanese runner Liao Ching-hsien won the women's 100-meter race at the Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Sri Lanka on Saturday, securing the first medal for the Taiwan team at the sports meet.

Liao edged out Lin Huijun of China, finishing in a time of 11.97 seconds, just 0.01 seconds ahead of Lin.

Taking the lead right out of the blocks, Liao was overtaken once by Lin but crossed the finish line ahead of the Chinese competitor.

Meanwhile, her compatriot Mao Chi-shun performed well in three of the five events held in the decathlon.

Mao placed second in the long jump with a leap of 6.33 meters and also in the shot put with a throw of 11.48 meters. He finished third in the 100-meter race, clocking 11.91.

In the men's 100-meter race, Taiwanese Lo Yen-yao finished fourth in a time of 10.81.

The sports event, which will run through June 12, has attracted 850 athletes from 43 countries and regions.
