Taipei, May 10 (CNA) Kaohsiung City government plans to invite Major League Baseball (MLB) teams to play their season openers at the main stadium of the World Games, held in the southern city in 2009, to diversify the use of the venue, said the city's deputy mayor Thursday.

The city wants to host games from a greater variety of sports, in addition to soccer matches and track and field events, Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Lee Yung-te said, adding that hosting baseball games at the World Games stadium will not affect usage of the Kaohsiung County Baseball Field.

Lee's remarks were made in response to Kaohsiung Councilor Lin Ying-jung's criticism about the lack of events taking place at the main stadium.

Lee, who also serves as convener of the stadium's operations management, said that the city government has entrusted the MLB to evaluate the possibility of whether the main stadium can be used as a baseball field.

If it works out, he said, Kaohsiung will make efforts to host openers for MLB and Nippon Professional Baseball teams.

Negotiations to invite Japanese and Korean soccer teams to train at the stadium during the spring season are also presently being conducted, Lee said.

Moreover, some Taiwanese pop singers have expressed their intentions to hold concerts in the stadium at the end of this year, he said, adding such events will show the stadium can be used for diverse events.
