Czech woman wins Miaoli Triathlon Championship

Taipei, April 10 (CNA) Defending champion Radka Vodickova ofthe Czech Repulic clocked in at 01: 54: 24 to retain her title in the 2011Miaoli International Triathlon Championships held in the northernTaiwan county Sunday.

Vodickova beat Hoi Long of Macao into second place and Taiwan'sChang Luo-yi into third spot. Hoi finished in a time of 01: 56: 46,and Chang in 02:08:19.

The Czech champion said her biggest challenges were the warmweather and Hoi, whose records have been closely trailing hers.

In the men's division, Taiwan's national team athlete WeiChen-chan secured a win, running well ahead of his closest rivalHsieh Sheng-yen.

Wei won the race in time of 01: 49: 05, while Hsieh finishedsecond in a time of 01: 50: 32, followed by Chiu Wei-chiang in01:51:47.

Wei said that although he did quite well in the swimming leg ofthe race, he needs to improve his performance in the cycling part soas to perform better in the London Olympics next year.

More than 600 triathletes from at home and abroad took part inthe two-day event.

Among them, was 64-year-old Lee Cheng-chuan who returned totriathlon training after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer lastyear. He was the oldest competitor in the event.

Another senior participant was Chou Huai-yu, who was competingfor the first time. The 56-year-old said she has been using the sportto help her recovery from a spinal injury that almost paralyzed her.

Both Lee and Chou completed the race, winning applause from thecrowd.

The Chinese Taipei Triathlon Association said the 51.5 km routeincluded a path along the Chiuhua Mountain, whose Haohan Slope isknown as an "A-class bike route" that tests competitors' strength,endurance and willpower.
