Taiwan loses to Cuba in Intercontinental Cup baseball tournament

Taipei, Oct. 26 (CNA) Taiwan was held scoreless Tuesday in a 2-0loss to Cuba, yielding first place in the preliminary round to itsopponent in the Intercontinental Cup baseball tournament in DouliouCity, Yunlin County.

The two teams, each of which were undefeated in round-robin playprior to the game, were each unable to break the other side'sdefenses throughout the first five scoreless innings.

Cuba broke the game open with a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixthinning on a single by Gouriel Yulieski, who hit another later in theeighth to give the team a 2-0 lead that it maintained until the endof the game.

Taiwan was held scoreless off Cuba's starter Gonzalez Yulieski,who sent out seven strikes and gave up three hits in six innings.

Taiwan's starter, Hung Chih-lung, pitched seven and two-thirdsinnings, striking out eight batters and yielding five hits beforerelief pitcher Lo Ching-lung took over.

With the loss, Taiwan had finished its games in the preliminarygroup with a 3-1 tally to rank in second place behind 3-0 Cuba, whichwas scheduled to face Hong Kong the following day.

The second round of the tournament will begin Oct. 28.
