Taipei, July 21 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Sunday afternoon expanded a heavy rain warning it had issued earlier in the day, from eight to 17 cities and counties across Taiwan, urging residents to be on the alert for lightning and strong winds, as well as possible flooding caused by torrential rains.

The heavy rain warning was in effect for New Taipei City, Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi city and county, Tainan and Kaohsiung cities, and Pingtung, Yilan, Taitung, Hualien and Penghu counties.

Earlier in the day, the CWB had issued a heavy rain warning for eight cities and counties but decided to expand it to 17, citing a stronger than expected thermal convection.

As of 1 p.m. Sunday, several townships in Haulien County were experiencing heavy rain, according to the CWB.
