Magnitude 3.5 quake hits Chiayi

Taipei, June 26 (CNA) A magnitude 3.5 earthquake jolted Chiayi County, southern Taiwan, at 5:08 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The epicenter of the quake was located at sea about 23.1 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Hall at a depth of 6.5, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Fanlu of Chiayi County, where it measured 3 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale, the CWB said.

The quake also measured an intensity of 2 in Chiayi City and Yulin in southern Taiwan, the CWB added.
