Taipei, June 12 (CNA) The body of a Taiwanese student, who went missing last week after going for swim in a river in Germany, has been found, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Wednesday.

The body of the exchange student, surnamed Tsai (蔡), was found Tuesday morning in the Weser River near Minden, according to a statement issued by MOFA.

Tsai's family has confirmed that the body is that of their 18-year-old son, who had been missing since last Friday, MOFA said.

In its statement, the ministry expressed condolences to the family and also thanked the German rescue teams for their search efforts over the past days.

According to foreign and local media reports, Tsai was part of a 60-member group that was camping on the banks of Weser River, and he was swept away while swimming in the river.

An autopsy has been scheduled in Germany later this week to determine the cause of Tsai's death and whether foul play was involved, the reports said.

Meanwhile, the German Institute Taipei, the de facto German embassy in Taiwan, also expressed condolences on Tsai's death, in a Facebook post Wednesday.
