Taipei, April 7 (CNA) Apple daily, one of the major Chinese language newspapers in Taiwan is to introduce an online subscription-based service for its website next week, the company announced on Sunday.

Apple Online, the website and app version of print newspaper Apple Daily, will officially launch the subscription-based members only service at 3 p.m. Wednesday, the website said.

As of press time, registration for subscription is free and readers are asked to make use of the opportunity to register, the website pointed out.

In February, Apple Daily's founder, Jimmy Lai (黎智英), said that almost every newspaper loses money, but a subscription-based service "will allow the media to survive and allow the future of to be more prosperous."

Lai made the remarks during a conference with writer Chang Ta-chuen (張大春) at the Taipei International Book Exhibition, held Feb. 2-9, at the Taipei World Trade Center.

Apple Daily, originally a Hong Kong-based newspaper founded in 1995 by Lai, entered the Taiwan market in 2003, focusing heavily on gossip, breaking news and paparazzi reports.

The paper currently sells for NT$20 (US$0.65) and had a daily circulation of 174,475 copies between January to June in 2018, according to Hong Kong financial portal Quamnet.

The other major newspapers in Taiwan are China Times, United Daily News and Liberty Times.
