Taipei, March 24 (CNA) An SUV with a drunk driver at the wheel rammed through the guardrail of an elevated expressway and fell to the ground some 20 meters below in New Taipei on Sunday, fatally injuring the driver, police said.

The 36-year-old man, identified only by his surname Chen (陳), was found by paramedics in the badly damaged car without any signs of life, police said, and he was declared dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

An initial blood test found the man had the equivalent of a 1.2mg/liter breath alcohol concentration, well above the 0.25mg/l legal limit, police said.

They suspect that the driver, a coffee machine salesman, was drunk before losing control of the vehicle on Provincial Highway 65 as he was heading toward Tucheng at around 7 a.m.

Police continue to investigate the crash to determine if any factors other than driving under the influence of alcohol were at play.
