Taipei, March 21 (CNA) More than 100 guns have been seized by police this month in a nationwide campaign against criminal gangs and illegal firearms, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said Thursday.

The confiscated firearms included 12 standard guns, 19 air guns and 96 replica guns, CIB Deputy Chief Lin Yan-tian (林炎田) said at a press conference.

In recent months, there has been an escalation of gang fights, some of which involved shootings mostly with replica guns, Lin said.

In an anti-crime crackdown March 2-19, police arrested 117 criminal suspects and seized 127 guns, he said.

In one raid, a suspect was found to be running a gun factory at which several modified and replicated guns were seized, Lin said.

Most replica firearms are made from realistic toy guns that can easily be converted into deadly weapons, Lin said, adding that the National Police Agency (NPA) is now formulating regulations against such toy guns on the local market.
