Wet weather across Taiwan, possible snow on high mountains

Taipei, Feb. 24 (CNA) Rainfall is expected across Taiwan during the daytime on Sunday due to a cold air mass from mainland China, with heavier rain expected in the north and northeastern parts, as well as some mountainous areas in central Taiwan, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Under the influence of the moisture air mass from southern China, there will be rain around Taiwan Sunday, with the northern part of the island to undergo a longer spell of wet weather than other parts, the weather bureau forecast.

The bureau also cautioned mountain hikers about slippery roads and pointed out that the chance that snow will fall on mountains over 3,000 meters above sea level is high.

The temperatures were measured at 13-14 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan early Sunday morning and at 15-18 degrees in other areas.

For the rest of the day, the highs will be at around 16 degrees in the north, 18-21 degrees in the central area as well as Hualien and Yilan, and 22-26 degrees in the south and Taichung, the CWB predicted.

Meanwhile, the bureau pointed out that Typhoon Wutip, the second storm formed over the Pacific Ocean this year, was located at 2,540 kilometers east southeast of Eluanbi, Taiwan's southernmost tip, at 2 a.m. Sunday, moving in a northwesterly direction toward the southern part of the Sea of Japan.

The typhoon will not impact Taiwan directly, the CWB forecast.
