Travelers still copping fines in Taiwan for bringing in meat products

Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) Four travelers, including an Irish national, were each fined NT$200,000 (US$6,501) at Taiwan's main airport Wednesday for bringing meat products into the country in contravention of a ban on such items, according to Taipei Customs.

The Irish national, who entered Taiwan via South Korea and Hong Kong, was slapped with a fine of NT$200,000 on arrival at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport after he was found to be carrying 0.713 kilograms of pork sausages, Customs said.

The other three passengers that copped a NT$200,000 fine the same day were a Taiwan national, found carrying 0.8 kilograms of crispy chicken biscuits with pork ingredients, and two Chinese nationals - one trying to bring in 0.9355 kg of pork sausages and the other 1.2465 kg of pork and chicken sausages, Customs said.

To prevent African swine fever (ASF) from reaching Taiwan, the government on Dec. 18 increased the fines for bringing in pork products from countries with ASF outbreaks, with first offenders liable to be fined NT$200,000 and repeat offenders NT$1 million.

Since then, over 31 people have been fined NT$200,000 for attempting to violate the ban, according to data from the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine valid as of Jan. 1.
