Taipei, May 17 (CNA) Dawu Township in Taitung County registered the highest temperature recorded this year after being hit by foehn wind -- dry, strong and hot downslope winds -- in the early afternoon Thursday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
The mercury soared to 37.9 degrees Celsius at 12:37 p.m. in the eastern Taiwan township, the highest recorded anywhere in Taiwan in 2018, the CWB said.
In addition, the temperature reached 36 degrees in Taipei at 11:42 a.m., the highest in Taiwan's capital this year, according to the bureau.
