Taipei, March 16 (CNA) An international conference on women's shelters and the prevention of violence against women is to be held in Taiwan next year, the Garden of Hope Foundation said Friday.

The 4th World Conference of Women's Shelters (WCWS) is expected to be attended by 2,000 people from 120 countries to Taiwan, according to the foundation.

Foundation chief executive officer Chi Hui-jung (紀惠容) said the annual conference will bring together individuals from around the world to discuss ways to help victims of domestic violence and reduce its prevalence.

Through the conference, the foundation will also take the opportunity to present Taiwan's contribution to the global women's movement, as well as highlight the government's efforts in promoting the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the foundation said.

The convention was adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly and came into force on September 1981.

Although Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations, the Legislative Yuan passed the CEDAW in a 2007 resolution and adopted it as domestic law in 2011.

The World Conference of Women's Shelters will be held in Taiwan on November 4-7, 2019.
