Taipei, Feb. 24 (CNA) Balloons are not allowed at this year's Taipei Lantern Festival for safety reasons, Taipei's Police Department reiterated Saturday, the festival's opening day.

All balloons, including LED party balloons, are prohibited, the department said.

Security will also be extremely tight throughout the festival period, with police officers stationed in the area, department official Li Chuan-che (李權哲) said.

Bomb-sniffing dogs are being deployed to patrol the area on a rotating basis to detect the presence of explosives, he said.

Trucks and large vehicles are not allowed to enter the venue during the festival, and drones are also not permitted unless cleared with city authorities beforehand, he said.

The 2018 Taipei Lantern Festival, which opened at 6 p.m. Saturday and runs until March 4, is being held around the city's North Gate (Beimen) Square.
