Taipei, Feb. 7 (CNA) The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) has received generous donations from various expatriate Taiwanese around the world in the wake of a deadly earthquake that struck Hualien County in eastern Taiwan late Tuesday, according to an OCAC press release Wednesday.

One such example, according to the OCAC, was of a Taiwanese expatriate in Southeast Asia, who did not wish to be named, donating up to US$100,000 (NT$2.92 million).

In another press release by the Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises on the Mainland (ATIEM), NT$6 million was also donated by Taiwanese expatriates in China.

Wang Ping-sheng (王屏生), ATIEM head, said the organization has requested other Taiwan business associations all over China to also make donations.

At least seven people were killed and 260 injured in the deadly earthquake that struck Hualien County in eastern Taiwan late Tuesday, with up to 67 people unaccounted for as of 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Hualien Emergency Operations Center.

The epicenter of the magnitude 6.0 earthquake was at sea about 18.3 kilometers north of Hualien County Hall at a relatively shallow depth of 10 km, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

A magnitude 5.7 aftershock rocked Hualien again at 11:21 p.m. Wednesday.
