Taipei, Jan. 16 (CNA) Train tickets for the Lunar New Year holiday along Taiwan's east and west coasts will become available on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25, respectively, the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) announced Tuesday.

East coast lines include the Yilan and North-link lines, Hualien-Taitung and South-link lines, the TRA said.

A total of 329 train journeys will be added to the regular schedule to deal with the surge in passengers expected from Feb. 13-21, around the Chinese New Year holiday, the TRA said.

Train tickets for the period can be booked from the TRA website and convenience stores or by telephone, according to the TRA.

To reduce passenger volume during peak travel periods, the TRA is offering a 30 percent discount for overnight trains during off-peak times on Feb. 14 and Feb. 19, it added.

On some designated train services, students will receive a 31 percent discount on Feb. 12-13 and Feb. 21-22.

Meanwhile, the TRA will add an extra eight trains on east coast lines and Ziqiang-class express trains from Taipei to Hualien and Taitung residents on Feb. 14-15 and Feb. 19-20, with online booking for tickets to start on Feb. 9.

The TRA online ticketing system requires passengers give a name and ID number, so priority can be given to residents of Hualien and Taitung during the holiday period.
