Pingtung, Taitung best places in Taiwan to see 2018 sunrise

Taipei, Dec. 11 (CNA) Sun chasers wanting to greet the earliest sunrise in Taiwan on New Year's day in 2018 should travel to the southernmost county of Pingtung and Taitung in the southeast, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Monday.

In low-lying areas, the earliest sunrise will occur over Taitung's outlying Orchid Island's Dongqing at 6:33 a.m., while sunrise over Green Island, also in Taitung County, will be at 6:34 a.m., according to Cheng Chen-feng (鄭振豐), an official with the CWB's astronomical observatory.

In Taiwan proper, the first sunrise will shine over Longkeng in Pingtung and Sanxiantai in Taitung at 6:35 a.m.

Other popular destinations for people seeking to catch the first sunrise of 2018 are Sandiaojiao in New Taipei, Suao in Yilan, and Chungte in Hualien at 6:37 a.m., while in Taitung's Fugang and Taimali, sunrise can be seen at 6:36 a.m.

For sunset watchers, meanwhile, the last sunset of 2017 will sink below the horizon on Taiwan proper at 5:25 p.m. and can be viewed in Tainan's Anping District, Kaohsiung's Sizihwan area and Pingtung's Guanshan area, according to Cheng.

The final sunset of 2017 will occur at 5:29 p.m. over Taiwan's outlying island of Kinmen and at 6:11 p.m. over Taiwan controlled Taiping Island in the South China Sea.
