Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) Heavy downpours can be expected in northern and eastern Taiwan Friday due to the combined effect of northeasterly winds and Tropical Storm Khanum, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) warned.

Yilan, in particular, is expected to see extremely torrential rain, with accumulated rainfall of over 500 mm within 24 hours, the bureau said.

In Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung, torrential rain is expected, with the accumulated rainfall exceeding 350 mm within 24 hours, according to the CWB.

Heavy rain is forecast for Taoyuan, Hualien and Taitung, with accumulated rainfall exceeding 80 mm within 24 hours, or 40 mm within an hour, it said.

As of 7 a.m. Friday, Khanum was 410 kilometers south-southeast of Taiwan's southeastern-most tip Eluanbi, moving at a westerly direction toward the Philippines' Luzon Island, CWB data showed.

Although the storm is not likely to hit Taiwan, it will interact with northeasterly winds and bring abundant precipitation to the country's northern, eastern and southern regions on Friday and Saturday, the bureau said.
