Taipei, Aug. 21 (CNA) The first postal-themed hotel in Taiwan is scheduled to open in Taipei's Nangang District by the end of this year, and is expected to attract business travelers, as well as backpackers and foreign tourists.

Image Taiwan Hotel Group is planning to convert an old post office into a hotel, while maintaining its exterior appearance. The project is part of rejuvenation efforts by the 120-year-old Chunghwa Post Co. (中華郵政).

The location is close to the Nangang Railway Station, which is also a station for the Taiwan High-Speed Rail and the Taipei Metro.

Rejuvenating historic architectural landmarks and converting them into hotels has become a trend in the international hospitality industry, Image Taiwan Chairman Mike Lin (林原廣) said, and the company is hoping to take advantage of the restoration to promote Taiwanese images and the country's cultural heritage.

Chunghwa Post celebrated its 120th anniversary in March. The anniversary is based on an order by the Qing emperor issued March 20, 1896, which agreed to the transformation of the Customs Post Office to the Imperial Chinese Post. March 20 has been Post Day of the Republic of China since 1947.

Postal-themed hotels can also be found in Japan and Singapore.
